Rodeo Diary

 3/16/2008 8:21:12 PM

Well things have been pretty busy around here with babies hitting the ground and the winter rodeos in full swing I have barely had a moment to myself. We are trying to get our place to a stopping point before we have to leave for Laughlin and the other rodeos on the west coast.

My first baby came at the end of February and his name is Ima Super Fly Guy he is by Frenchmans Guy and out of Streakin Six Babe by Streakin Six. He is so cute he is solid yellow with one white stop on his top lip. Be looking for him in the 2010 Myers sale as a two year old! He is going to be one barrel racing machine.

The rodeo seen has been decent but I have been plagued with some hit barrels. I hit a barrel in the second go of Tucson to win the round and made the short round at San Angelo and hit the first in the short round. Austin went really well placing in the first round and winning third in the average. Houston has also been going good I won 2 seconds, 1 first, and I won the average in my set for $8,000. I was really happy with Stitch and we are going back to the semis on Thursday. I got to run Duke at his first official pro rodeo last week in Goliad. We ran in the slack and was winning third after the slack was over. I was so proud of him since he has been off due to a tendon injury and in a stall for two months.

I also went to the speedhorse this month and had a pretty good payday winning a little over $10,000 on Cosmo. She just amazes me with how fast she is. She completely missed the first barrel in the short round and a still ran a very respectable time. We ended up placing in both goes and splitting 6th and 7th in the average.

We have one mare due this month on the 26th her name is Firewater Fetish and she is bred to Hot Corona. I can’t wait for it to come I get so excited about the babies

I had a new sponsor come on board this month called Platinum Performance. This is an awesome supplement for you horse that has all the research behind it and studies to prove that it works! Check them out on my sponsor page you will be amazed by all of the products they have.

It has been awhile since I have written but it seems like this is the first time I have been able to sit down. We are in Tucson and I just got finished running and I am sitting third in the first round which was a little bit on the muddy side.

Since last time I wrote I have managed to reclaim my title at Denver and I placed 4th at Ft. Worth. I also went to the Ft. Worth AQHA show and qualified Stitch and Cosmo to the world show and I won the Cowboy Publishing event on Stitch.

This winter has been good but not near like it was last year. This year I have managed to get a check every rodeo I have entered placing at Jackson, San Antonio, and the first round at San Angelo. I have also been really busy putting the apartment in our new and barn selling horses. I have also been dipping a little into the futurity horse world and have done fairly decent. Winning the second round at Gonzales and placing at Lance Graves Futurity with Cosmo.

I am also busy with the breeding business getting all the contracts finished for my mares and getting ready for the babies to come. My streakin six mare is overdue and looks like she is going to pop so we are awaiting the arrival and hoping that it is yellow!!!!

It has been awhile since I have posted but I feel like I have finally gotten off the dream boat and gotten my life back in order. Las Vegas was a grueling 10 days and I started getting sick after the fourth round and stayed sick the rest of the time which didn’t help any.
First of all I want to thank everyone that helped me win this gold buckle I couldn’t have done it without my team!  Most of all I want to thank Stitch he showed this year that he is the ultimate barrel horse and I want to thank all the girls voting him horse of the year and horse with the most heart.
I know ya’ll probably think I am going to give you a breakdown of each night but I am not going to. Everyone that is reading this probably watched or has the DVD set and I seriously don’t want to have to think about and put it on paper!
Stitch has been on break since the finals and he will crack out at Denver in a couple of weeks. I have been riding a lot of colts and building a barn so time for rodeo-ing has been put on the back burner. Doug and I did go to Mike and Sherry Lynn’s roping and barrel race where he won 16 thousand I won a little over 2,000 on Duke. Last weekend I went to the Frost bite Futurity and placed in the average on my mare Cosmo.
This week we went to Lafayette, La and I rode Root Beer at his first pro rodeo and we left winning second after the slack

The regular season is finally over and in some way I am glad, and in others I am sad to see it go. My season has been like a dream and I hope I don’t have to wake up till after the finals!
Dallas was awesome this year. My original plan was to ride Potato Chip like I had done last year. Last year I hit a barrel in the finals to win it, but when he came up with a pulled suspensory I decided I would rather have him for the NFR than Dallas. So the backup plan was to ride Stitch or Root Beer. I took both of them up there and got a chance to work them in the arena and decided I better ride Stitch because of Root Beer being unseasoned at the rodeos.
My decision was a good one winning fourth in the first round, first in the second round, second in the average, splint second and third in the Semis, and winning the final round. I won a little over 22,000 and put myself $50,000 in front of Lindsey Sears.
The finals in the past hasn’t always been what I wanted it to be. In 2003 the first year I made it I was riding Leroy and I had a terrible finals. I had rode him all through high school and college and I knew him like the back of my hand and after such a bad showing at the NFR I knew something was wrong but couldn’t figure it out, and then before Denver in January he finally limped. It took three months to figure out that he had a torn deep flexor that was torn so oddly that he never fully recovered from it.
The second NFR which was in 2005 was slightly better winning about 40,000 and placing in every round that I didn’t hit a barrel in. Then last year was the most disappointing of them all losing the world title in the last round by only $2,500.
So this year I have a new game plan and a new attitude. I feel like a seasoned vet and me and my horses know what we have to do to take home the gold buckle.
I am bringing Bambi Robb out to take care of the horses full time and my vet Dr. Marty Tanner is coming out during the 5th round and staying till the end to take care of Stitch.
During Dallas I decided that I need to make a little change in Stitches style.  He has a roll back style and I usually ride him a hackamore that has no lift, so I decided to put a long shank Martha Wright so that I could keep his shoulder up in the turns and have a little more control than the hackamore. I think this is going to a key in the buildings.
This rodeo was a great confidence builder for the Thomas and Mack and for the first time in my career I can say that I am ready for the NFR.
On a side note I also went to the WPRA finals and WBR finals this month and did very well with my colts.  I am excited about them going to Oklahoma City during the finals with Sabra O’Quinn and Wanda Jetton.  I hope that not only I can be successful in December but colts can be successful too.
See ya in Vegas!!!!.
